How to filter out spam from your mentions in the Inbox

Last Updated: Jun 22, 2017 09:25AM EDT
In this article we will explain you how to filter out spam from your mentions
There are several ways you can do this. For example you can block mentions from spam accounts by adding their username (author is not) in your search query or by adding/deleting certain words from the query you’ve set up. But these accounts come and go and only make you search query more complex.
Therefore, you can use this simple but very effective method to reduce the amount of mentions from spam accounts in your Inbox or Smart folder.
Start by creating a smart tag “spam” or whichever label suits you. In this article we’ll use the smart tag “spam”. If you don’t know how to create a smart tag, you can read about it here

Next thing you’ll want to do is add rules to this smart tag. For example the things spam mentions have in common. Do they have a certain source/domain/word combination in common that could be added to the smart tag? Here you’ll have the ability to experiment and find the combination that suits you best.
Once you have created your “spam” smart tag all incoming mentions in your Inbox or Smart folder will be automatically tagged. Now you can simply add the following rule to your inbox (or any other smart folder):

Or if you are working from the Inbox you can use the filter and the filter field:

Note: You can also create a smart folder that’s dedicated to the spam mentions. This folder will contain all the mentions that are labelled with the “spam” tag. This can be useful when you want to make sure no important mentions or actionable mentions are labelled with the tag for some reason.
By using this method you will also be able to get a detailed overview in your Insights tab what the amount of spam mentions is (due to the tag) compared to the actionable mentions. Something you wouldn’t be able to do when you filter them out from the keyword search.
