Determining location for mentions in CX Social

Last Updated: Apr 25, 2017 08:25AM EDT
In CX Social every mention has a location-category called Country where we show in which country the mention was written or tweeted.

Based on the source of the mention, locationis determined in different ways. In this article we will explain how we do this for different sources.

ŸŸ●  Determining location for Blogs, News and Forums
ŸŸ●  Determining location for Social Networks

Determining location for Blogs, News and Forums

For Blogs, News and Forums we check the Top-Level Domain (TLD) name. If the website has a country specific TLD, we will use the TLD as location for that mention.

Example: https://www.example.fr

In this case the TLD is .fr – mentions coming form this website will have the country category set to France. If a general TLD is used (.com, .eu, .net, .org) we will do a detection based analysis via geolocation of the IP address that is used for the website. For websites we limit the dection to country level. By using this method more than 90% of the mentions have the correct location set.

Determining location for Social Networks

Not all Social Networks provide us the location of a mention when landing in CX Social. Every Social Network has a different API and might not allow location based endpoints. You can click on the Social Network to read more on how location is determined.

    ŸŸ   ●  Facebook
    ŸŸ   ●  Twitter
    ŸŸ   ●  Foursquare
    ŸŸ   ●  Youtube
    ŸŸ   ●  Instagram
    ŸŸ   ●  Google+

Determining Facebook Location

Location detection for Facebook mentions is not possible due to API restrictions for 3rd party application and Privacy reasons. Unfortunately this is a decision made by Facebook and is out of our control. Due to this API limitation you wont be able to use location based filters in CX Social for Facebook mentions. Facebook mentions in CX Social will have the “unknown” value for the Country field.

You can always manually change the location for Facebook mentions and select a Country which ofcourse will enable you to use the filter fields.

Determining location for Twitter mentions

For Twitter we determine location based on two things:

ŸŸ●  Does the tweet have a location attached (coming from a smartphone with location settings enabled) we will use that specifc location.

ŸŸ●  If there’s no location attachted to the tweet we will use the location that is set in the profile of the user.

Every Twitter profile page has a text field where users can write down their location. However keep in mind that not everyone types in a location that exist. There’s a lot of users that simply write “the internet” or “Land of the Unicorns” which ofcourse prevents us to determine the location. If however the name of a City is filled in, we will try and determine the location of the Country.

Keep in mind that this is not always 100% accurate – words can have different meanings and can be interpreted as a geograpical location. If we aren’t sure of the location, we will simply give it an “unknown” value for the Country field.

Determining location for Foursquare mentions

Foursquare is pretty easy! It’s a location based platform so we can pinpoint this location very accurately.

Determining location for Youtube mentions

Determining location for Youtube mentions is not possible due to limitations of the Youtube API. Unfortunately due to these restrictions we can not determine the location for Youtube mentions.

In this case we label the Youtube mentions with an Unknown value for the Country category. Again, this can be changed manually.

Determining location for Instagram mentions

Location detection for Instagram mentions is possible however, this is only possible if the person adds a location to the photo when posting. If there’s no location attached to the photo we won’t be able to determine the location of the mention.

Determining location for Google+ mentions

Determining location for  Google+ mentions is not possible due to limitations of the Google+ API. Unfortunately due to these restrictions we can not determine the location of Google+ mentions.

In this case we label the Google+ mentions with an Unknown value for the Country category. Again, this can be changed manually.
