Chart Builder in CX Social

In CX Social we have a tool called the Chart Builder that allows you to create and build your own custom charts and tables based on all the data in your topic(s). In this article we will explain everything from creating a widget, saving it as a template and adding it to a dashboard. Additionally we will cover a couple of the advanced options as well.
 
Based on the account plan you have you will find the Chart Builder in the widget gallery or in the side bar of CX Social when you are in the Insights tab.

Creating a widget with the Chart Builder
 
Building your own widget(s) – whether it is a line graph, a table or KPI’s – is really simple. Simply navigate to the widget gallery or the Insights and select Chart Builder. After clicking on the Chart Builder you will see the overview to start creating your custom widget.
 


In the above screenshot you can see two sections. On the left side of the image you can see the side bar where you have a subsection with three options: Creating a chart, the Overview of your saved templates and some preset CX Social charts to give you an idea of what is possible.
 
On the right side you can see the Chart Builder overview with 3 subsections called Source data, Chart Options and Table Options. In order to create your own custom chart, start of by giving your chart a name and selecting whether or not it has to be a table or a chart. Note: Keep in mind this can be changed at any time.


 
Source Data
 
After naming your custom chart you will see the next subsection called Source Data. Here you will want to select which topic data you want to use to build your custom chart. It’s important to know that there’s a major difference between two types of source data. You have Mention based data or Monitored Profile based data.

Mention based data
CX Social tracks data (=mentions) originating from many different sources online, e.g. social networks, forums, blogs and more. Each mention has different 'attributes' like country of origin; date posted, sentiment and so on. Other mentions have extra attributes specific to the social network they are from: for example, Twitter mentions can have a 'type' which can be a tweet/reply or a retweet.


 

Source data Mentions charts are used to learn about the number of (subset of) mentions that landed in CX Social for a certain topic during a certain period of time. 
 
ŸŸMonitored Profile KPIs
CX Social is also able to monitor specific social network profiles. By selecting monitored profiles we have other metrics available besides the mentions related to that specific profile. For example for a monitored Twitter profile we also know the number of followers, lists and following. It enables you to create charts based on data of the monitored profiles. Selecting any of the above types will change the Topic section accordingly.


 
Date Range

After selecting the Source Data you can set a date range and an additional filter for your custom graph. However do keep in mind that if you select a custom date range it will be locked to that graph. It will stack with the date range selected on your dashboard when filtering.
 
Chart Options
 
After carefully selecting the Source Data you want to use for your custom graph you can select what exactly you want to display on your custom chart.
 


Start off by selecting the type of graph. You can select between a line chart, area chart, pie chart and a column chart – as the 4 default charts. You can load 3 additional variants by clicking on the show more-button. After selecting the type you can define what exactly you want to display on the vertical and horizontal axis. Each of the axes can be defined of what exactly needs to be displayed. Simply click on each axis to see the available options.
 
Each of these axes has the option to be set for a certain period of time. For example you can select the graph to display per minute, hour, day, week instead of the default “Day”. Vertical axis can be set to moving single values, sums, average and even cumulative periods.




Additionally after selecting the axis you have the option to segment as well. You can create an additional segmentation in your chart by toggling this option and selecting any of the listed values. Selecting Advanced will allow you to create your custom (filter) segmentation.



We also provide a couple of extra Chart options. From stacking series as absolute numbers (or totals) to selecting colors and whether or not to display the sum. Adding a legend to maintain an overview or an export button is possible as well.
 
Table Options

If you selected a table instead of a chart you have Table Options available as well. You can select how each column or row has to be computed and whether or not you want a legend displayed as well.


 
After selecting each of the above options click “Create Chart” you view the result. You will be able to see a Preview if you scroll up a bit. If it isn’t what you had in mind, make the proper adjustments and click Update Chart to see the new result.

 
Saving a chart as a template in the Chart builder
 
If you created a chart in the chart builder you want to use more than once or even for different social networks where you only need to change minor things, you can save it as a template instead of having to create it over and over again.
Follow the steps in the first part of the support article on how to create a chart and once you are done you have the option to save your chart as a template, as you can see in the screenshot here below.


 
After saving the chart as a template it will appear in the left side bar under Your Chart Templates.
 
Adding your custom widget to a dashboard.
 
When you are done creating the widget, the last and final step is adding your newly created widget to your dashboard. Simply click on the “Add to dashboard” icon in the upper right corner. It will trigger a publish dialog box where you will be able to select on which dashboard you want to add the widget.


 

Example Mention based Chart with segmentation
 
In this example we are going to look at the conversations about 2 automotive brands on Twitter. In this case we used the luxury car brand Aston Martin and Lamborghini. Basically we want to compare the amount of mentions for these two brands over a certain period of time and this is the end result:
 


For this chart we selected the following options: we started off by giving the chart a proper name that allows you and others to understand what is being displayed.
 
Next we selected Source Data Mentions and chose the two topics, in this case Topic Aston Martin and Lamborghini. You can select multiple topics by holding cmd or ctrl. Next to the topic we have also added an additional filter where we filtered on source: Twitter as we only want to know the buzz of these brands on Twitter. Not counting blogs, news and other sources.


 
In the example you can see that the vertical axis is showing the amount of mentions and the horizontal axis is displaying the publish date which allows us to see when there were certain spikes for each of these brands. Additionally we have selected segmentation in this example, as we want to display both topics as a separate line. In this case we have chosen the topic segmentation.
 
Example Profile based Chart with segmentation
 
Continuing with the same topics as in the previous example; in this example we are going to look at the amount of followers these two automotive brands have on Twitter. Basically in this example we want to compare the amount of followers these two profiles have on Twitter displayed as a line graph over a certain of time. Take a look at the end result:


 
For this chart we selected the following options: We started off by giving the chart a proper name that allows you and others to understand what is being displayed. Next we selected Source Data Profile based and chose the two profiles, in this case the Twitter profiles of Aston Martin and Lamborghini. You can select multiple profiles by holding cmd or ctrl + click.


 
Additionally we have selected segmentation in this example, as we want to display both profiles as a separate line. In this case we have chosen the Monitored Profile segmentation. With this chart we are able to monitor the growth of both these accounts for example.
